Cemetery Update

For those descended from Zachariah Gaither, son of Benjamin, a matter of concern as to the condition of the remains of the cemetery containing Zachariah's third wife, Sarah Taylor (died 22 Apr 1856 age 65 years 2 months 8 days), her parents, John Taylor (died 5 Jan 1843 age 71) and Elizabeth (died 5 Mar 1842 age 60) and two of Sarah's sons, Noah (died 13 Apr 1854 age 35) and Elijah (4 Aug 1816 - 3 Apr 1863). To show better lines of descent, Noah married Emily Ratledge and they had Mary, Thomas, Martha, Zachariah, Yank and Sarah. This family stayed in the Iredell/Davie area. Elijah married Nancy Jane Comer and they had Martha (married Richard Dyson and moved to Indiana), Bud, Sarah, Margaret, Nancy, Mary Jane, John, Zachariah, Rachel, Ellis, Nancy, and Tempie. The property was sold out of the family in the 1960's. The owners in the mid sixties gave permission for a State road to be constructed through the cemetery. As best we can find, there are only six stones surviving. Elijah's stone is flat and broken having been unearthed last year. Noah's is standing intact, Sarah's was broken last year by a farmer who didn't see it in the under brush. John's is lying against a tree and Elizabeth's is flat. The state owns the property because of a Native American village site. We need to restore and protect that which is left. Contact Larry Campbell if you would like to be a part of this effort.
